Initial driving lesson

Obtain a Learner’s Permit and have it with you during all lessons.

  • You will first have to obtain a driver’s permit from the DMV. The learner’s permit is not just a piece of paper but a crucial document that signifies you have met the minimum requirements to start learning to drive. Having your learner’s permit during all driver’s lessons is not just a requirement but a sign of your preparedness and responsibility.

For this First lesson, you will be in the Passenger Seat.

  • Our instructor will drive you away from your pick-up location to either a parking lot or another quiet residential area. This will reduce the risk of an accident as you will not have to worry about navigating traffic on your first time behind the wheel.

The Instructor Will Ease You Into Driving.

  • Since this is your first lesson, you may feel anxious. Our instructors will work with you to put you at ease so you can focus and absorb everything you are taught.

Familiarization with the Car.

  • Our instructor will discuss the car’s instruments and controls during your first driving lesson. You will learn about the car’s controls, including the steering wheel, pedals (accelerator, brake, clutch), mirrors, and dashboard indicators. Strong emphasis will be placed on constantly checking blind spots with a shoulder check, looking at mirrors, and signaling your intentions whenever your car shifts in position.

Time to take the driver’s seat.

  • Our instructor will observe you taking a seat in the driver’s seat, ensure you are positioned correctly, and that the mirror is adjusted for your view. This involves checking the car doors, seat and steering adjustments, seatbelts, and mirrors. You will get to try out a few basic maneuvers and learn some essential techniques to set you up for a lifetime of safe driving.

Take your first short drive.

  • You will only cover 4-6 miles during your first in-car driving lesson. Learning to shift gears smoothly and efficiently is a key part of the first lesson. You will learn the importance of checking mirrors, blind spots, and signaling with indicators before moving. During this driving lesson, the instructor will have pull-overs to guide you through each step, providing feedback and support. Remember, your first lesson is about quality, not quantity.

There may be situations where the instructor will switch seats.

  • Our instructors understand that some students learn more visually and through observation. That is why you might switch sides with your instructor several times to visualize how to perform a specific maneuver. For example, our instructor may have observed that you could not back up correctly. He will then ask you to observe them backing up the car.
If this happens, observe. Whether it be showing you how to hold the steering wheel, easing off the brake, or reading the gauges, there’s nothing better than a real-life demo combined with explanations on paper.

Q&A and Feedback.

  • Our instructors will take thorough notes during your driving lessons. At the end of the driving session, he will review these notes to provide constructive feedback. Some feedback may be visual to refresh your mind and give you a picture of what you did right or wrong. Our instructor is there to answer any questions, so do not hesitate to ask about anything you do not understand or feel uncomfortable with.

Build a working relationship with your instructor.

  • Remember, your instructor is not just there to help you succeed but to ensure you feel confident and encouraged. Rest assured, your instructor will be there for whatever happens during your driving adventure!

Daily Reports and Feedback.

  • Your instructor will evaluate your progress after each in-car driving lesson and create a personalized report.

Ongoing driving lessons

Ongoing driving lessons refer to a sustained period of learning to drive, often involving multiple sessions with a driving instructorThese lessons can be part of a structured driver’s education program or simply additional training for new or experienced drivers.
Key aspects of ongoing driving lessons:
Structured Curriculum:
  • Driving schools typically offer a curriculum covering various aspects of driving, including rules of the road, vehicle operation, and defensive driving techniques.

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction:

  • Ongoing lessons involve practical driving experience with a licensed instructor, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned in real-world scenarios.

Progressive Learning:

  • As students gain experience, driving instructors can adjust lessons to focus on specific areas for improvement or introduce more complex driving situations.

Frequency and Duration:

  • Lessons can vary in length (e.g., 60-90 minutes) and frequency (e.g., 2-3 times per week for beginners, less frequently for experienced drivers).

Preparation for Road Test:

  • Ongoing lessons often include preparation for the official road test, ensuring students are confident and well-versed in the requirements.

Beyond the Basics: In addition to basic driving skills, ongoing lessons can cover advanced techniques like lane changes, parking maneuvers, highway driving, and preparing for the road test.

Licence test

In Georgia, you can’t take your driver’s license test online, but you can take a written knowledge test online to prepare for the actual test. The online practice tests, like those we offer or DDS Driver’s License Practice Test, can help you study for the real thing. The actual written test is a two-part exam, covering road signs and road rules, which you must take in person at a DDS Customer Service Center. The road test, which assesses your driving skills, is also taken in person, but can be either virtual or traditional.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

Online Practice Tests:

  • The DDS Driver’s License Practice Test offers free online practice tests that mimic the actual written knowledge exam.

Written Knowledge Test:

  • This test, taken at a DDS Customer Service Center, is divided into two sections: road signs and road rules. You need to answer a minimum of 15 questions correctly in each section to pass.

Road Test:

  • The road test, which is administered in person, assesses your ability to safely operate a vehicle. It can be taken either in a traditional setting or virtually.
