5 Tips to Overcome Driving Lesson Fear

If the anxiety does not paralyze or hinder you as a driver, I would say it is a healthy response to being a new driver.

1. Working closely with your driving instructors is paramount:
  • Your driving instructor is not just a teacher but a mentor and guide on your journey to becoming a safe and confident driver. They will teach you the rules of the road, help you develop your driving skills, and provide reassurance and comfort to alleviate any stress and anxiety you may experience. Establishing a strong working relationship with your instructor is crucial to your success as a new driver.
2. Avoid Stressful Driving Conditions:
  • Our school prioritizes your safety. We ensure the vehicles are safe and well-maintained to avoid challenging driving situations. If you are anxious about a specific road, our instructor will familiarize himself with the routes and guide you through less busy roads. This approach is designed to help you manage driving anxiety by not overwhelming yourself, making you feel more secure and less anxious.
3. Know the particulars of your first driving lesson:
  • For all sessions, our instructor will provide you with a readout of the day's lessons. We will provide you with a pre-planned insight lesson so that you know what is expected during the lesson.
  • Instruction and Feedback: Receiving personalized instruction and feedback from our qualified driving instructor.

This daily readout should include:

  • The car will be used for the day's lessons.
  • The roads or routes for the day's lessons
  • Expected time for the lessons.
  • What maneuvers will you do for that day?
  • Our instructor is more than just a teacher. They are a guide and a support system throughout your learning journey. They will be there to support you, provide constructive feedback when needed, and guide you, always with your best interests in mind.
4. Build Confidence Gradually:
  • Start with low-traffic areas or simpler maneuvers and gradually work up to more challenging situations. This gradual progression is designed to help you feel less overwhelmed and more in control as you build your driving skills, fostering a sense of confidence and competence.
  • Your first hours behind the wheel will be spent in open car parks, neighborhoods, and other low-traffic areas. Our instructor will teach you the basic driving actions, such as braking, acceleration, reversing, and parking, without the fear of running into other drivers.
  • Once you are confident, the instructor will encourage you to start the lessons in low-traffic areas.
5. Ensure you are entirely focused
  • Most road accidents are caused by human errors, especially when people get distracted. As you take your driving lessons, it's crucial to pinpoint and avoid anything that may decrease your concentration. This will help you stay focused and responsible on the road.
  • Your full concentration should be on what the instructor says and how you control the vehicle.
