Tips on Driving in Ice and Snow

Follow these simple tips when driving in the snow or freezing cold, and you will arrive at your destination in one piece.

  • Prepare for driving on snow by finding a safe, open parking lot and practicing controlled slides. This hands-on experience will give you a solid understanding of driving dynamics in snow, boosting your confidence.
  • Remember, slowing down and handling the car gently are the keys to driving in snow. Imagine a cup of water on the dashboard. Smooth, controlled movements are crucial when the road is slippery. This approach will help you feel more in control and less anxious.
  • If you start sliding, DO NOT UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES slam on the brakes. You're only doing yourself harm. Very lightly press the brakes so they start grabbing, then steer to wherever you want.
  • Keep plenty of distance between yourself and other vehicles. You never know when you or someone else might hit an ice patch and slide.
  • Give yourself EXTRA TIME TO STOP when approaching a stop sign or light; these spots are especially slick or slushy, and you can easily slide right through an intersection. I've done it several times, even when I thought I was giving myself enough time to stop!
